Sunshine Place Village is located in Watsonville, California and nested adjacent to the Watsonville wetlands preserve. The complex design offer homeowners access to local wildlife namely birds, fish, deer, and other wildlife, as well as stunning views. This complex was developed as a bedroom community for the University of California Santa Cruz while talking into account the farming history of the community. In addition, the complex was intended to accommodate families and individuals with diverse economic backgrounds.
The project consisted of 87 family units which required Planned Unit Development Entitlements from the City.
The design concept was to develop residential units with a wide variety of layouts which included 18 different building types. Designed with the wetlands in mind, the units offered view to the neighborhood and wetlands. Colors were designed to blend with nature yet offer an assortment of complementarity tones that created diversity. An array of roof styles and building forms offer richness to the overall architectural design. Each of the 18 housing models provide individually unique porches, balconies and decks with diverse custom column designs.
Exterior finishes include a combination of wood and plaster or stone and plaster with shingle roofs. The multi-family buildings are set up as Row Houses, each having a separate entrance and a separate garage. To ensure diversity of design, detailing varied from structure to structure. Interior features include high ceilings, large kitchens, sizable closets, fireplaces, multiple bathrooms and open-rail grand stairways. Master baths include luxurious tubs and separate showers.
